Talkeetna, also known as Alaska Funkiest Town is small historic village in the Alaskan Matanuska-Susitna Borough on the way to Denali National Park. The town has a population of just over 1,000 people but is one of the coolest little towns we’ve come across. Talkeetna is located in prime location as 3 rivers, the Talkeetna, Susitna, and Chulitna merge and meet at the towns edge.

Great restaurants, stores and shops, hiking, flight seeing, rafting, boat tours, kayaking, fishing, winter sports, and a panoramic view of Mount Denali and the Alaskan Range make Talkeetna a must visit when traveling through Alaska especially on your way to Denali National Park.

Live music in the park is a town staple especially during the summer months when tourism is high. A small campground located at the north end of the town is a first come first serve location and typically packed during this time of year.

How to get to Talkeetna:

Talkeetna is located 2.5 hours north of Anchorage and a pretty easy drive to get to the town. Take the Glenn Highway from Anchorage towards Wasilla. Once in Wasilla c you will continue on the George Parks Highway until you reach Talkeetna Spur Road. The road leads you to the sign for the town exit which leads you right into the heart of the time downtown streets.

From Wasilla, you could also cut through Hatcher Pass during the summer months for an even more scenic drive.

Our Visit to Talkeetna:

After traveling through Hatcher Pass on our way to Denali National Park, we had to make a stop in Talkeetna. We had heard great things about Alaska’s Funkiest Town so we had to check it out. Our first stop was Denali Brewing Company, located a few miles out of town heading towards to Talkeetna. While planning our Denali adventure, we enjoyed a few drinks, bought some souvenirs and polished off an absolutely delicious Margarita Pizza. We planned on getting our families some souvenirs but they ere sold out of the shirts our rents would want (So we ended up purchasing them at the Denali Brewing Store located on the Main Street in Talkeetna).

We then headed into the town center to check out Talkeetna scene. The town was pretty busy the day we visited, with streets filled with travelers, the restaurants were filled and families were enjoying the day! It was nice to see everyone enjoying the outdoors. After walking into some some of the cooler shops we walked down to the end of town to catch a view of Mount Denali and the Alaskan Range in the distance.

The spot where we stopped was the intersection of the three rivers and off inn the distance with a clear view was North Americas tallest peak. It was such a breathtaking site that I felt I never wanted to leave that tiny plot of earth. We took in the scenery, stopped in some stores, then made our way towards the National Park.

Denali Brewing Company:

A few miles before entering the village of Talkeetna, you will come across Denali Brewing Company. Denali Brewing is one of Alaskas premier craft beer breweries and honestly, one of the places for drinks, food, and ambiance. Their award winning beer, ciders, and spirits make Denali Brewing a hot stop along the way to Denali and Talkeetna.

Enjoy some outdoor and indoor seating while enjoying your drinks, grab souvenir from their very large gift shop, and be sure to order some food. Denali Brewing serves a wide range of food on their men but they are definitely known for their pizzas. My personal favorite was there margarita pizza which almost personal size and one person can easily down one.

Denali Brewing also has a shop where you can find all the items that the brewery itself might be out of located right in Talkeetna. so if you miss something don’t worry they have a spot for you to grab what you need. Denali Brewing is an absolute must when heading to Talkeetna.

Our personal favorite beer at Denali Brewing is easily the Twister Creek IPA and the Purple Haze. Both of those beers were great choices and we definitely enjoyed them.

Summer Activities in Talkeetna:

Hiking:

Talkeetna is a great destination for hiking on the road to Denali. Miles of trails with views of the three rivers, Denali, and the Alaskan Range make Talkeetna a hot hiking spot for travelers. My personal favorite hike if the 6.5 mile moderate Curry Ridge Trail in Denali State Park.

Fishing:

Talkeetna is an amazing spot for fishing in Alaska. Fishing tours and boat rentals can be found all throughout the town, and surrounding areas. Talkeetna is one of the few places where fisherman can catch all 5 pacific Salmon Species.

River Activities:

Talkeetna is a hot bed for river fun. Company’s within the town offer rafting trips, kayaking, and speed boat tours. Opportunities to travel miles of river are there for the taking as there is plenty of it to go around.

ATV Riding:

Talkeetna offers guided and on your own ATV tours. You can ride along the hundreds of miles of Denali State Park trails or take a guided tour around the historic town and surrounding areas.

Flightseeing:

Flightseeing is common summer activity for locals and tourists. Tours and charters for access to Denali National Park and the Alaskan Range are premier in the Talkeetna area. From here you can take a flight tour around North Americas highest peak.

Winter Activities in Talkeetna:

Winter Activities in Talkeetna are just as popular as summer activities.

Snowshoeing:

Grab a pair of snow shoes and head out to the many miles of trails in the Talkeetna area. Snow shoe rentals can be found in a few different locations in the town and access to the trails are gained form right in the town.

Talkeetna Dog Sledding:

Dog Sledding, one of Alaska’s longest activities is a very common activity during the inter months. Many companies offer the tours and they are a great way to experience the Alaskan winter like native Alaskans back in the day.

Ice Fish:

A few different local companies offer ice fishing rentals and tours during the winter months. Once the rivers freeze, grab a pole and head out to the river for some of ht best ice fishing that Alaska has to offer.

Nordic Skiing:

Cross Country Skiing in Talkeetna is as common during the winter, as hiking is in the summer. Head out on the many miles of designated trails specifically designed for skiing.

Watch the Northern Lights in Talkeetna:

Views of the northern lights from Talkeetna are visible from pretty much everywhere. Take a short drive out of town to experience the wonders without the glow of the city lights or grab table at a local restaurant and eat some sinner as you watch the lights.

Winter Zipline Tours:

Denali Zipline Tours is a company that offers winter zipline tours in the Denali area. Located right in Talkeetna the tours give you access to the Alaskan wilderness from above.

Snowmobiling:

Snowmobiling and snow machine riding are common in Talkeetna. Take a ride along the same ATV trails accessible in the summer. Take a short across the rivers for miles of trails at the nearby Trapper Creek.

About Hatcher Pass:

Located in the Talkeetna Mountains between Palmer and Willow is an Alaskan haven and scenic destination of Hatcher Pass. As the name states, Hatcher Pass is a mountain pass that cuts through the Talkeetna Mountains on the way towards Denali National Park. The pass runs the through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and is an ideal getaway for residents in the Anchorage, Wasilla, and Willow areas of the 49th state. Having done this drive before, it is one of the most scenic and beautiful drives in Alaska.

The pass and surrounding areas are most notable for the protecting and gold mining that took place in the valley during the 19th and 20th centuries. Today you can still find active mines and areas where you are not allowed to trespass on.

How To get To Hatcher Pass:

Access to the pass is gained from the nearby towns of Wasilla, Palmer, or Willow. Wasilla-Fishhook Road also known as Hatcher Pass Road, is a road which runs 60 miles through the pass and from both towns will lead right to the beginning of the pass.

During the summer months beginning in June, the pass opes up for vehicles to take the scenic drive through the he pass runs 22 miles between Palmer and Willow. The road is rough in some spots and mostly made up of dirt and gravel.

Our Visit to Hatcher Pass

During our travel in Alaska we were fortunate enough to spend 2 days in the Hatcher Pass area. Driving up to the pas from Wasilla, we passed a pull off for Little Susitna River comprised of large rocks to walk out and observe the raging river cutting through high narrow rock walls with tress hanging off its edges. It was an absolutely great spot for a quick leg stretch and offered some great opportunities for some photos.

Our first day we decided to head up to the Independence Mine State Historic Park which is an abandoned gold mine that was last in use in the 1940’s and 50’s. The skies darkened and rain sprinkled the for the early morning but eventually cleared up by mid afternoon which we were grateful for. Once at the park we hiked up to see the mine before meeting with an amazing local photographer for a an amazing Alaska photoshoot. Our second day in the Hatcher Pass area we ventured to the Summit Lake State Recreational Site for some hiking before driving through through pass on our way to Talkeetna.

Independence Mine State Historic Park:

The most popular activity during the the year at Hatcher Pass is to visit the Independence Mine State Historic Park. This abandoned gold mine is a local and tourist favorite. Remnants the old mine can be seen all over. Structure and houses sit at the visitor center and restored to its original look. Visitors can walk through the mines, tunnels and walkways that workers and their families took everyday during the gold rush in the Talkeetna Mountains.

Independence Mine was originally set up as two separate mines, the Alaska Free Gold Mine and Independence Mine. In 1938 the Alaska Pacific Consolidated Mining Company combined the two and at its peak right before World War II, the mine had over 200 workers. 12 miles of tunnels made up the mine and gold was a found daily. The mine operated until the start of the war and fizzled out after a brief stint after the end of World War II officially closing in 1951. The Historic Site was set up in 1980 and has been restored ever since.

Hiking around the site is a popular activity during the summer months. From the visitor center you can take Hardrock Trail which leads you thought the old buildings, a collapsed mill, and barracks and takes you up to the mine itself. During the winter months the site is a great destination for cross country skiing that cut through site and local surroundings.

Our Hike

On our visit to the mine we stopped in the visitor center and refurbished structures for more information and to get a feel for what the miners lived in back when the mine was operational. After venturing out of the buildings at the bottom of the site we made our way along the Independence Mine Trail. The Independence Mine Trail is a 2 mile easy hike that leads you through what is left of the old mine. It was a great hike especially for those looking for an easy family friendly hike. Then it was off to our photoshoot.

Summit Lake State Recreation Site:

Our second day in the Hatcher Pass Area we made our way to the Summit Lake State Recreation Site. Standing at 3,886 feet, Summit Lake is a prime destination for visitors, travelers, hikers and skiers. Summit Lake is glacially carved lake that sits at the top of Hatcher Pass. The Recreation Site sits 2 miles past the entrance to the Independence Mine State Historic Site after turning off the main road and heading up into there mountain pass.

The road leading to summit lake is typically open July through late September for visitors to take in the scenery of the lake and the mountains and valley in the backdrop. To cut through Hatcher Pass you will need to pas right by Summit Lake so getting out and doing a hike or relaxing for a little bit is always a good idea. During the summer months it is common to see wildlife, paragliders, and hikers about.

We knew that we would be driving through the pass later in the day spa we wanted to get a little hike in beforehand. We chose the April Bowl Trail. The April Bowl Trail is a 2.2 mille out and back featuring steep hiking but offered us with amazing views of the valley below and the glacier lakes nestled in the mountains.

When you make the trek to the Recreation Site, make sure to take in the Alaskan Range in the distance, the Little Sustina River that cuts through the valley, and even pick some fresh berries.

Drive through the Pass:

As we passed by the parking area for Summit Lake you continued on the road that switchbacks down the mountain until we reached the flat pass heading into the valley. The drive is one of the most scenic in Alaska. Our journey the pass was great because we encountered only 2 cars along the way so we had the whole pas to ourselves.

As we continued through he pass the sky grew bigger and bigger with sprawling meadow views overlooked by mountain peaks and trees as far as you could see. As per usual we stopped at about 45 places for photos and false bear sightings in the distance. It was awesome!

Driving through Hatcher Pass can only be done from July through September as the land management does not keep up with plowing during the heavy Alaskan winters. The pass is a great drive for wildlife viewing, sight seeing, photographing, and camping. Those looking to camp can pull off at the many turn outs, river beds, and inlets along the pass and set up for the night or however log their stay may be.

Summer Activities at Hatcher Pass:

Hiking:

Hatcher Pass is filled with miles of gorgeous trails for hikers to enjoy. From the Mine, to the Lake and beyond it is a hikers haven. Maps fro trails and areas where backcountry is allowed can be found at the summit of the Lake and when you start traveling toward the pass.

Paragliding:

Paragliding is an incredibly popular summer activity at Hatcher Pass. Gliders take off from “Nixon’s Nose”, a summit that is only accessible via hiking along the pass.

Wildlife Viewing:

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places in the entire world, throw in the wildlife and this place is as close to perfection as you’ll find. Hatcher Pass is no different. Catch a glimpse of the Moose, caribou, sheep, black and brown bears, wolf, wolverine, coyote, beaver, fox, marten, mink, hare, Arctic ground squirrels, collared pikas, hoary marmots, and lynx.

Winter Activities at Hatcher Pass:

Skiing and Snowboarding:

Hatcher Pass is on the of the premier destinations in Alaska for snowboarders and downhill skiers. Sweetawk Resort located in the pass is the resort in which snow goers flock to in order to catch some fresh powder. The resort opened in 2020 and has been an Alaskan staple ever since.

Snowmobiling:

Snowmobiling is one of the most popular winter activities in the pass. The entire length of the pass and roads are open and groomed for snow adventurers. Make sure to abide by park rules and look out for back country signs for some off the beaten path excursions.

Cross Country Skiing:

Hatcher Pass is one the best destinations for cross country skiing in the state. The mine site and Archangel Road are regularly groomed for skiers to trek the gorgeous terrain. Catch the rope tow at the Old Fishhook Inn for a glimpse into the life of miners back in the day who had to trek the valley with skis to get around.

Alaska’s Tucked Away Hidden Gem

About Eklutna Lake:

Less than an hours drive from Anchorage (22 miles), tucked in Alaska’s Chugach Mountains, is the pristine destination of Eklutna Lake. This gorgeous lake features over 15 miles of shoreline, and is a prime sport for hiking, camping, kayaking, biking, fishing, and ATV riding. Eklutna Lake is located within the Chugach State Park and is 1 mile wide and 7 miles in length. It is a great destination for a day trip or overnight stay.

Eklutna Lake is fed by the Eklutna Glacier making the water one of the coldest in the area. So if you choose to go in the lake or take your kayak or boats out, beware of the freezing cold water temperatures.

Our Visit to Eklutna Lake

A day after visiting Katmai National Park and Preserve (click here to check out our post on Katmai) we decided to head up to Eklutna Lake. The drive took us 45 minutes via the Glenn Highway and before we knew it we were there. Our first night at Eklutna Lake we camped in one of the 60 plus first come first serve camp sites.

If you know anything about Alaska especially in the summer then you’ll know that the sun literally doesn’t set until after midnight. We decided to take the stroll down to the Lakes waterfront to catch the sunset as we arrived very late. It was one of the coolest sunsets we’ve experienced together on all of our journeys.

Twin Peaks Treats

After awakening to the sun around 5am the next day, we knew we wanted to go for a hike to catch some of the views that we had heard so much about. We stopped for a coffee and sandwich at Twin Peaks Treats, a short drive up the road from the campground. This local restaurant serves ice cream, coffee, drinks, and pre made sandwiches and wraps. Twin Peaks Treats sits at the base and in view of the Twin Peaks above. Outdoor seating and an incredibly helpful (with directions and recommendations) and friendly staff, made it a great stop and a good start to the day.

Twin Peaks Trail

After our morning coffee and breakfast we headed back down to the lake to gear up and start our journey into he mountains. We chose the Twin Peaks Trail, and it was a great choice. The trail is marked as a 2.5 mile hike (misleading as it is 2.5 up and 2.5 back, so technically a 5 mile hike) that leads to an open mountain meadow with views of the lake and valley below. Along the way we experienced breathtaking views and even an old vehicle from what looks like the 50’s or 60’s that rolled down the cliff.

We highly recommend the Twin Peaks Trail if visiting Eklutna Lake. On our way out of the park as we headed for Hatcher Pass we came a cross a large black bear walking along the road. It was really cool to just slowly drive alongside the bear as it ventured down the road and off into the woods until the bear disappeared into the thick Alaskan brush.

How To Get to Eklutna Lake:

Eklutna Lake is located 22 miles north of Anchorage. Which in Alaska means it takes about 45-60 minutes to travel. From downtown Anchorage, take the Glenn Highway north to the Eklutna exit and heading towards Eklutna Lake Road East into the mountains. About 10 miles along the road will bring you to the entrance the park. The road reaches a dead end when you arrive at the recreational area. Fees for entry to the lake are $5 and can be paid at the entrance to the recreation area.

Equipment Rentals at Eklutna Lake

When traveling to Eklutna Lake especially when visiting Alaska you most likely will not have all of the equipment needed in order to truly take in what the Lake has to offer. They offer kayaks, paddle boats, bikes, and guided tours around the lake.

Summer Activities at Eklutna Lake:

Biking and ATV Riding:

Eklutna Lake as stated before has over 15 miles of shoreline. This makes it a great destination for visitors to bike or ATV around the lake. The lake features a trail circling the lake which is a great spot to use your bicycles. There are ATV trails as well along the lake and it is a very popular destination for those seeking off-roading fun.

Kayaking:

Eklutna Lake is one of the best destinations in the state for kayaking. A short walk from the designated parking area and you’ll find yourself along the shore of the lake. You won’t have to carry your kayak too far. With over seven miles of lake to work with, Kayakers can spend an entire day on the water.

As mentioned before, please be aware of the cold water temperatures if you chose to jump or if you capsize. Signs for what to do and how long it will take for hypothermia to kick in are located on the trail to the lake. be sure to reads them over, it could just save your life.

Hiking:

Eklutna Lake is prime destination to catch some great Alaskan trails. Hiking trails are located around the lake and entering the surrounding Chugach Mountains and some even ahead to the top of some pretty gnarly peaks. The trails range from easy to difficult but one thing about Alaska hiking is that east trails are moderate anywhere else and same goes for their moderate trails. They are extremely difficult due to the terrain and elevation.

As previously discussed above, our favorite hike at Eklutna Lake is the Twin Peaks Trail. This 5 mile round trip moderate (difficult) hike sees an elevation gain of 1,800 feet and take you right into the heart of the Chugach Mountains. The views along the trail are unparalleled. The trails leads to a sprawling open mountain meadow where views of some sheep make it a very cool scene. Take note that sign to the trail says it is only 2.5 miles, but that is just one way as it is not specified on the sign.

Camping:

Eklutna Lake features the Eklutna Lake Campground which has been rated as one of Alaska’s best. The campground is home to 50 first come first serve camp sites which are open to RV’s and well as vehicles and tents. Fees for the campground are $20 per night and can be paid at pay stations at the entrance to the lake.

The campground also features 5 for rent cabins that requires either a hike, bike, ate, or kayak to access as no roads lead to the cabins. The cabins are typically priced around $100 per night depending on the season and availability.

Winter Activities at Eklutna Lake:

Cross Country Skiing:

During the winter months at Eklutna Lake, visitors to the park use the trails around the lake for some cross country skiing. The flat terrain makes for a perfect location to catch some great views and get a nice workout in when visiting the Lake.

Snowmobiling:

Most of the ATV trails around the lake are a little difficult to get to during the winter but that doesn’t mean people don’t use them. Snow Mobiling is a very popular winter activity for reaching the cooler part so the park from Eklutna Lake.

Ice Skating:

Because Eklutna Lake is fed by the Eklutna Glacier it makes for some of the coldest water in the region. During the winter months when the water freezes, visitors take the opportunity to skate around the beautiful lake which has to be one of the coolest locations to do so in the world. (In my opinion).

Camping:

Camping is available year round at Eklutna Lake. The cabins are equipped with hot water and a wood burning stave for heat. The RV and tent campgrounds are also available albeit definitely cold.

About Katmai National Park and Preserve

Katmai National Park and Preserve spans over 4 million acres, making it one of the largest national parks in the United States and one of Alaska’s endless, true wonders. The National Park is located close to the village of King Salmon in Alaska’s southwestern peninsula. The park is most notable for its Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, and having the densest population of grizzly bears in the world. When visiting during the salmon run in July, it’s likely you’ll see upwards of 20 bears at the Brooks falls viewing platform!

Katmai National Park and Preserve is named after Mount Katmai, a stratovolcano whose caldera collapsed after the Novarupta eruption of 1912 and which is now a 2 by 3 mile wide lake. The park is home to 18 volcanoes, seven of which have been active in the last century. Katmai National Park and Preserve is smack dab in the middle of the Aleutian Mountain Range running through most of southwestern Alaska. If flying to the park, you will be able to take in the beauty of this mountain range from the air!

How To Get To Katmai National Park and Preserve

Alaska is known as the “Last Frontier” for a reason. Its climate, wilderness, and remote areas make it very difficult to access most of the state, especially by vehicle. Katmai is no different. There is no road that leads to Katmai National Park and Preserve. Access to the park is gained via boat or floater plane.

The majority of visitors to the park enter via plane from Anchorage to King Salmon. King Salmon is located about 290 miles southwest of Anchorage. Once you land in King Salmon you will take a 20 minute floater plane flight, landing on the shores of the park entrance. This is the easiest (and maybe prettiest) way to access the park. This is how we chose to arrive when we visited Katmai. We flew with Anchorage Aero and had the best experience.

Access to the park is also gained via power boat leaving from the nearby villages of King Salmon and Naknek. The parks headquarters are located in King Salmon, 30 miles from Brooks Camp, where all visitors are taken to upon arrival.

Choosing Anchorage Aero

Choosing Anchorage Aero for our experience turned out to be the very best decision and likely a large reason we loved our trip so much!

Booking with Anchorage Aero

Booking a reservation was seamless and can be done directly here. The process is pretty explanatory, with choosing dates based on availability. We suggest booking in advance if you can! We went on July 5th, 2022 and there were plenty of bears, but we had heard the salmon and bears had just arrived a few days before us.

Anchorage Aero was extremely communicative and sent out calendar invites after booking our reservations. We were given all details about what we needed to bring, what time to arrive, and how we would be eating that day! You can’t easily bring a ton of food or packed lunch to the park, so it was great knowing that lunch was included in our reservation. The food at Katmai was also a top notch buffet with excellent options. During our trip, we had tacos, but the staff informed us that the meals change pretty often.

Flying to Katmai and Weather Delays

Weather in Alaska is always changing, so it’s best to not only be prepared with your clothing, but also with your patience. The night before our trip to Katmai, we were emailed that we would be delayed in the morning due to forecasted fog. Truthfully, we had just flown in the day before and could use a little extra sleep, so we weren’t too upset about the few hours of sleep we were gaining.

Anchorage Aero safely assessed the weather and sent us out safely after a couple hours of delay. We flew to King Salmon which took about 1 hour and 45 minutes in a 9 seater plane. The views were EPIC from the plane and we suggest you bargain with the pilot for either the co-pilot seat or the one in the very back for some added leg room.

Once in King Salmon, we had to wait about 45 minutes for the fog to lift and we were on our way in a 5 seater float plane! We had never flown in a float plane before (Britt has plane anxiety and motion sickness), so the fact that these flights were smoother than commercial airlines was amazing. This flight took about 15-25 minutes and felt too short in our opinion because the aerial view was really amazing. On the flight Nick was even able to spot moose trekking through the marsh land below us.

Brooks Falls and Grizzly Bear Viewing

As stated earlier, Katmai National Park and Preserve is home to the densest bear population in the world. This is due to the many rivers, lakes, and abundance of salmon in the water systems. While bears typically roam near the cabins and waling areas, brooks Falls is the hot spot destination for bear viewing within the park and honestly in the world.

When arriving at the park you are required to take a 20 minute bear safety class in order to proceed into the park. A pin is handed out so the rangers know that you have attended the class.

July through early September (particularly early July) is known as the annual salmon run in which salmon swim north to breed. The brown bear population roam the Brooks River and in particular Brooks Falls to fatten up for the winter. Brooks Falls is a viewing platform stationed right next the main waterfall where bears position themselves to catch salmon as they make the jump to the top.

When arriving at the platform you will be placed on a waiting list for your turn to access the main platform. While you wait, there is a covered waiting area and viewing platform down river with great sights of bears in their environment.

Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes

The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is a 40 mile long ash filled valley formed during the 1912 Novarupta eruption of 1912. The eruption was the largest volcanic eruption by volume to occur during the 20th century and resulted in the collapse of Mount Katmai’s caldera, and over 100 earthquakes occurred. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is filled with ash flow from the eruption and in some points can reach up to 700ft deep.

When you arrive at Brooks Camp follow signs for the shuttle that takes you down to the valley. It is the only way to access the valley and the safest way to not encounter bears on your journey.

Our First Alaskan Hike

About Byron Glacier:

Located 1.5 hours south of Anchorage in the heart of the Alaska Portage Valley section of the sprawling Chugach National Forest , the Byron Glacier Trail is an amazing family friendly hike. The trail, located walking distance from Portage Lake and the Begich Boggs Visitor Center, is a 2.8 mile road trip rated as easy due to limited elevation gain (100 feet) and the relatively stable walking path during the hike.

Access to the trail is gained via the parking area right off Portage Lake Loop, and leads right to the trail head. The trail runs parallel to the Byron Creek, a glacier creek of mountain runoff. Byron Creek offers great spots to stop and take in the scenery and play in some shallow water areas. One thing to be aware of during the hie is the water levels of the creek. Due to the glacier runoff the creek is susceptible to heavy rapids and deep pockets.

“Beware of Wildlife”

During your trek on the Byron Glacier Trail you’ll be exposed to a lot of wildlife including moose, potentially brown bears, and birds. Dense brush and narrow turns can be found throughout the hike, so be sure to have conversations, and make noise (not yell) to alert wildlife of your presence as to not surprise them (especially grizzly bears).

On the first day of our trip to Alaska we chose to drive down and check out the Byron Glacier Trail. Pulling into the parking area we were excited for our first Alaskan hike. As we geared up with our packs and camera, we discussed what we would do if we encountered some wildlife on the trail. Safe to say, I failed! Not even a quarter of the mile into he hike, we turned a corner around thick brush and came face to face, not even 5 feet away, from a giant moose and we completely startled each other (the moose and I).

My first reaction was to say holy s**t in a not so soft or relaxed voice, which as discussed before is not how you want to respond in the event you come into contact with wildlife. Thankfully instead of charging, the moose ran off into the brush and disappeared in seconds. I was not prepared to see wildlife this close, or this soon on the hike, and looking back I was lucky to be okay after that encounter. Lesson learned.

Dress Appropriately For Weather

During our hike we experienced what locals call the true Alaskan weather, aka, unpredictable. The hike started off warm with sunshine lighting up the path and the glacier beyond. Soon the weather turned and the rain started. Thankfully we always pack our North Face Venture Rain Coats (click to check them out) for the unpredictability of Mother Nature. Eventually the rain passed and we were left with a nice cool breeze and great views.

Views upon Views

The Byron Glacier shares the same ice that fuels the Portage Glacier and Blackstone Glacier in the Prince William Sound. The mountains above the trail are jagged and baron, with ice covering portions of the mountain sides. The hike gives you a great feel for what it is like in Alaska’s backcountry and offers glimpses into what remains from the last ice age.

Trekking the Byron Glacier Trail fill your eyes with absolute beauty. Jagged rock edges, green trees leave you feeling fulfilled, whatever fulfillment is to you. Jagged cliff edges and green trees make Byron Glacier one of the prettiest trails in the Portage area. Typically on the mountain sides of the trail you will see Ice caverns and caves in which those brave enough to venture in, will catch an amazing glimpse at this work of nature.

Unfortunately for us, the lack of rain and mild winter left the trail with less caverns accessible to us. During our visit we did not see any other hikers heading to the cave entrances. During the summers especially following a mild winter, ice caves are susceptible to collapse, and I think we can all agree that being crushed or becoming stuck in an ice cave in the Alaskan wilderness is not an ideal situation.

How to get to the Byron Glacier Trail:

1500 Byron Glacier Road, Girdwood, AK 995887

From Anchorage, you will head south on the Seward Highway towards the Turnagain Arm. You turn left (east) on Portage Glacier Road and head about 5 miles down the road before turning right on Portage Lake Loop which turns into Portage Glacier Road. The trail head is located in the parking area about a half mile down the road.

Open May through September the Visitor Center is a great spot to learn about local wildlife, the Portage Valley ecosystems and history, and relax on the banks of the Portage Lake.

Visit Whittier, Alaska:

Whittier is located about a 20 minute drive from the trailhead. Access to Whittier is gained via the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a sprawling 2.5 mile one lane tunnel (largest in North America). Whittier is known for fishing and as for being the gateway to the Prince William Sound.

Visit Girdwood, Alaska:

One of the cooler towns we encountered, Girdwood is a great destination for snow sport enthusiasts, beer lovers, wildlife viewers, and hikers. They have my favorite Alaskan Brewery as well, the Girdwood Brewery.

Portage; Alaska’s Ghost Town:

The town of Portage, a short drive from the trail, was a town that was destroyed during the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake which saw the ground sink 6 feet putting it below the tide level. Today the town is abandoned but remnants of its history can still be seen.

Girdwood Brewing Company

Address: 2700 Alyeska Hwy, Girdwood, AK 99587

Hours of Operation: 12pm-8pm everyday

Located in the small ski town of Girdwood, located about a 45 minute drive south along the Seward Highway from Anchorage, Girdwood Brewery was by far our favorite in the state. Nestled off of Alyeska Highway at the foot of the mountains, Girdwood is a prime location for a brewery. Girdwood’s tap room is a wood framed design with skis taking up just about every inch of wall space. Patrons can order Girdwood’s craft beer in 4 pack cans, growlers or single glasses in the brewery.

Located right outside the entrance is Girdwood’s Beer Garden. Benches, tables and fire pits make this a very comfortable and cozy location to relax and have a drink no matter what time of year it is. Right around the corner of the bar, are restrooms and merchandise for sale. Turn the corner and you can even watch employees make, design and can the beer right in front of you.

Girdwood Brewing Company does not have food in the brewery but they do have food trucks located just off the Beer Garden on rotating schedule. Daily food trucks include:

Crepes de Paris: Traditional French crepes with delicious and savory fillings

Izakaya: Ramen bowls and light Japanese fares.

Bruceskis: Turkish street foods such as Kabaabs, Falafel, and Hummus plates.

Blue Rista: New Mexican Burgers, Tacos, Burritos, Frito Pies & More…

Mochileros: Authentic Guatemalan inspired dishes with American fusion.

Mountain Pies: Pizza and wings

Our personal favorite beer at the Gyrdwood Brewing Company is “Down The Chute” a 5.3 ABV Kolsch which is incredibly light and refreshing and one of the best beers we’ve honestly ever had.

Denali Brewing Company

Hours of Operation: 12pm-8pm everyday

Located on the Talkeetna Spur Road on the way to Talkeetna is Denali Brewing Company. Located within view of North America’s tallest peak, Mount Denali, the brewery is definitely must visit when traveling through Alaska. Denali Brewing Company features a large tasting room fixed with 2 levels, an outdoor area for enjoying the food and drinks, and a large mech store inside.

Denali Brewing Company serves drafts, growlers, tasters, and spirits in their tasting room with views over the production floor for all the enjoy while you drink your delicious drinks. Dogs are welcome on the patio and the tasting room features a large brick oven pizza menu made right in front of you! Let me tell you, the pizza is amazing.

Outside of the main tasting room, a few mile sup the road on the Main Street in Talkeetna is the Denali Brewpub. This location features a little larger menu and is open from 11am-9pm daily.

Denali Brewing Company is also home to: Alaska Meadery, Alaska Ciderworks, Denali Spirits. These local favorites just show how progressive Denali Brewing is when it comes to expanding their business and opening up different avenues for the company.

Our personal favorite drink at Denali Brewing is the “Twister Creek IPA”. This 6.7 ABV is one of Denalis most popular beers and for a reason.

Seward Brewing Company

Hours of Operation: 3pm-9pm Thursday-Monday. Closed: Tuesday, Wednesday

Seward is one of Alaskas coolest little towns. This fishing and boating community which is the headquarters for Kenai Fjords National Park and about 2 hours drive south from Anchorage, is home to Seward Brewing Company. Seward Brewing is a locally owned brewery that brews it’s craft beers during the summer months and offers rotating taps daily.

Located at the southern end of town, Seward Brewing is a multi level brewery with takes and a bar downstairs, and bar, tables and an arcade made specifically for the kids upstairs. This wood framed brewery is fixed with snowboards covering the walls and an ambiance of date night and friends night out vibes.

The brewery offers a limited menu fixed with local fares and pizza, all of which are delicious and pretty highly rated. My personal favorites are the Pinbone IPA and the Crusty Whale Pale Ale. As for food, Seward has the best fish tacos that we came across in Alaska. They were so good we got them on multiple nights. The pizza is also incredibly tasty.

Double Shovel Cider Company

Address: 502 W 58th Ave C, Anchorage, AK 99518

Hours of Operation: 12pm-8pm everyday

This next brewery is not your typical one as this is a Cider Company. Double Shovel Cider Company located in Anchorage, offers visitors the ability to create their own cider along with traditional ciders brewed in house. With a multitude of flavors and ciders ranging from sweet to dry, this place is a must visit while in Anchorage. Double Shovel is the first and largest micro-cidery in Alaska. The company uses hand picked local fruits and makes all of their ciders as gluten free.

This warehouse style brewery, Double Shovel has tables with views of the production inside, and a cider garden outside. When you arrive you’ll be immediately greeted by a large selection board of ciders and large variety on tap. The bar tenders did a great job of explaining how it works when picking and even helped us based on our likes.

The cider does not offer food, but they do have food trucks located right beyond the beer garden. The rotating food trucks include:

Mochileros: Authentic Guatemalan inspired dishes with American fusion.

Fromagios: Sammies and artison meats and cheeses

Mountain Pies: Pizza and wings

Alaska Grizzly Dogs: Hot dogs, fries, and chili dogs

49th State Brewing

Hours of Operation: 11am-11pm Monday-Saturday, 11am-10pm Sunday

49th State Brewing is easily Alaska’s most popular destination when it comes to food and drink. The Brewery is one of the most highly trafficked breweries in all of the world. Thousands of people flock the brewery daily (or at least during the summer months when tourism is high). 49th State Brewing is a 3 leveled establishment with bar and restaurant setting on the first floor Wirth their own gift shop, a more upscale upstairs setting. An outdoor patio on the second floor gives guests an amazing view of the bay beyond, and a top floor outdoor patio with its own bar offers the best views of sunsets in the city.

49th State brew their own craft beers with locally grown and picked ingredients. The food menu is one of there larger menus we came across in the state. Known for being one ion the only places to sell Yak, this is an incredibly popular item on the menu. Fresh caught fish daily take up al large portion of the menu as well.

49th State brews 5 different beers and 4 craft sodas offering a very unique taste in every product. Our personal favorite of their beers is the “Blonde Eagle Ale”. This 5.2 ABV crisp ale is light and refreshing and goes down smooth with their food.
